What is autism?

Autism is a developmental condition that can affect how a person communicates, learns, interacts with others, and responds to the world around them. Every autistic child is different and has their own strengths and support needs. An evaluation can help you better understand your child's individual development.

Is autism a disease, and can it be cured?

Autism is not a disease that a child catches, and ABA does not cure autism. Therapy focuses on helping children develop useful skills in areas such as communication, safety, independence, play, and daily routines. The goals should be based on what is meaningful and helpful for each child.

Did I do something during pregnancy that caused my child's autism?

Parents should not blame themselves for their child's diagnosis. Autism is complex, and a BCBA cannot determine what medically or biologically caused it. Questions about pregnancy, genetics, or medical causes should be discussed with your child's physician.

Will my child ever talk?

No professional can know with certainty whether a child will develop spoken language or how much they will speak. Our goal is to help your child communicate in the most effective way available to them. Communication may include pointing, gestures, pictures, a communication device, sounds, words, or a combination of these methods.

Can my child communicate even if they do not speak?

Yes. A child can learn to request things, make choices, ask for help, reject something, and express needs without using spoken words. The team will begin with the way your child currently communicates and build from there.

Will my child be independent as an adult?

It is not possible to predict exactly how independent a child will be as an adult. Therapy can help develop important skills such as communication, self-care, safety, problem-solving, and participation in daily routines. Goals should be selected according to your child's current abilities and future needs.

Will my child be able to attend school?

Many autistic children attend school, but the type of classroom and support they receive will vary. The school district determines whether a child qualifies for special education services and develops the educational plan. With written permission, the BCBA may share relevant information and collaborate with the school team when appropriate.

Will my child always need therapy?

Not every child needs the same amount or length of therapy. The BCBA will regularly review your child's progress, current needs, safety concerns, and level of independence. Services may be changed, reduced, or ended when they are no longer clinically necessary or when another service would be more appropriate.

Who will care for my child when I am no longer able to?

This is an important concern for many parents. ABA can help your child develop communication, safety, self-care, and independence skills. Long-term decisions about guardianship, finances, housing, and future caregiving should also be discussed with qualified legal, financial, and community professionals.

How can I know that my child will be safe and treated well?

You may ask about staff qualifications, supervision, safety procedures, communication, and how concerns are handled. Your child should be treated with dignity and respect, and their privacy and rights should be protected. The agency should clearly explain how you can report a concern or complaint.
